Calligrapher: Syrian calligrapher Uthman Taha
Script: Neskh
Neskh is a cursive, proportional script, first developed in the 10th century by the Abbasid vizier and calligrapher Ibn Muqlah (886–940), and later perfected by Ibn al-Bawwab (d. 1022), the master calligrapher who continued his tradition. The Ottoman variation is known for its delicate features and lightness upon the eyes.
15 lines per page. 20 pages per Para/Juz
The coincidental organization or tawafuq of this 15-line arrangement is that every page ends with the last word of the verse. The last verse is never incomplete. This makes it easier for both the regular reader to pick up where they left off as well as for the Hafiz to read 20 pages in 20 units of prayer in the Ramadan tarawih prayers. Hafiz Osman Nuri Kayish-zade (d. 1895) was the first to write the Mushaf in this style called “ayetberkenar.” Badiuzzaman Said Nursi described this as part of the miraculous offering of the Quran for the human eye.
